McNelis to chair online meeting on rights of those working from home

‘The world of work is changing, and we must emerge from the pandemic with a robust system of worker protections’

The Covid-19 pandemic and the increased numbers now working from home have highlighted the “many shortcomings” in workers rights in Ireland.

This is the view of Labour Galway City West councillor, Niall McNelis, who will chair an online meeting on this issue next week.

.

The Right To Switch Off - Worker Rights For Those Working From Home will take place on Facebook Live on Wednesday February 24 at 7:30pm. The main speaker will be Labour Senator and party spokesperson on Employment Affairs, Marie Sherlock. Theresa Butler, SIPTU Health Official, and Bernie Ní Fhlatharta of the Galway Trades Council, will also speak at the event

"The pandemic has highlighted many shortcomings in Ireland’s worker rights,” said Cllr McNelis, "including lack of adequate statutory sick pay, lack of pay for student nurses, and a lack of protections for those working from home.”

.

“The increase in those working from home has drawn attention to serious deficiencies in the protections for these workers. The world of work is changing, and we must emerge from the pandemic with a robust system of worker protections, including the right to trade union representation.”
