High-level meeting expected to progress new emergency department for UHG

Sen Sean Kyne says progress has been 'stubbornly slow' on a 'vital project' for Galway

A high-level meeting to advance a new emergency department for UHG will take place on March 2 between the Saolta hospital group and the national HSE and HSE estates.

Enabling works are presently taking place on site at University Hospital Galway, but the sign off for lodging the planning application has "been stubbornly slow" according to Fine Gael senator, Seán Kyne, who raised the delay during a recent Seanad debate.

He added: "Nothing can be built without planning permission and finalisation of the planning design for the ED and maternity and paediatric units. It is necessary to allow the project to progress.”

However, there are hopes that the meeting scheduled for next week will resolve these issues and allow progress to be made. “I will continue to pursue this vital project for Galway and its delivery," said Sen Kyne. "Staff have to endure conditions that are not fit for purpose and patients likewise attend in cramped and crowded conditions.”
