The total number of submissions received by Galway County Council regarding the waste transfer station facility permit at Pollboy, Ballinasloe was 674, 359 by e-mail and 315 by post and hand delivered, according to Cllr Evelyn Parsons.
Cllr Parsons described the response as 'remarkable', given that the public engagement process occurred during a Level 5 lockdown.
''It's a great tribute to the people of the Ballinasloe and surrounding area who managed to make their voices heard on the issue during these difficult restricted times. There are huge concerns locally regarding health, safety, environment, tourism and attracting future investment should this development get the go ahead," she said.
"Our local and national representatives from all parties and none have stood solidly in support of the Ballinasloe community in this regard, who along with committed community volunteers from Ballinasloe Says No group really got behind this energetic campaign,'' Cllr Parsons said.
"The applicant has until 5pm on Wednesday March 10 to submit their comments on these submissions. Galway County Council has to make a decision within 25 working days after the applicant submits their reply to the submissions.
''So, we are now looking at April 14 at the latest for a decision from Galway County Council,'' Cllr Parsons confirmed.
