Live streaming of city council meetings to be discussed next month

Green councillor raises issue of Strategic Procedures Committees being steamed to the public

Galway City Council will discuss live streaming meetings once again on February 8.

Last Monday’s meeting concluded with some councillors speaking in favour of the meetings being broadcast and available to the public.

Ultimately, due to time constraints, Mayor Mike Cubbard asked Cllr Peter Keane to leave it on the agenda until February 8 when the issue will be dealt with.

'Concerns'

Cllr Donal Lyons expressed ‘budgetary concerns’ regarding the costs involved and the matter will be dealt with at the outset of the meeting next month.

Green Party councillor, Niall Murphy, is in favour of making the meetings available online. “I would be in favour of making a video stream of council meetings publicly available,” he said. “Unfortunately, standing order 24 only refers to the Council Meetings, and not the meetings of the Strategic Procedures Committees (SPC ).

"In many cases the SPC meetings are less formal and less confrontational than the council meetings. This leads to a better discussion. So members of the public who wish to be better informed about the work of the council would often learn more from an SPC meeting than they would when the topic reaches a monthly council meeting.”
