GCC’s PLC biomed course provides an access route into university science degree courses

Galway Community College has been successfully running a QQI Level 5 biomedical/laboratory skills course for the past five years. This course gives students many options to progress into university degree courses and to access employment in the thriving MedTech sector in Galway.

This one-year course is designed to allow students who may have missed out on CAO points to gain entry into science degree courses which reserve a number of places for PLC students.

Many past graduates have progressed into science and engineering courses at NUIG, GMIT, UCD, and UCC. Course coordinator Tom Flanagan said: “At this time of year Leaving Certificate students are focusing on mock results and may feel under pressure to achieve the points they need for university. This course can be an excellent backup plan; we always advise students to do their best but to take comfort in knowing there are other routes to get to where you want to go.” It is also a really good option for young students to get a great foundation in science, research, practical skills and laboratory reporting before commencing their university studies.

Learners get a really good foundation in science which makes first year in college that little bit easier.

GCC has strong contacts within the biomed industry, allowing students a chance to gain work experience in the biomedical and pharma sector. Some past students have gained employment straight after this course.

If you have questions in relation to this course you can find further information at www.galwaycc.ie, or email the course coordinator Tom Flanagan at [email protected].
