IRISH CHANTEUSE Derby Browne is back in the Town Hall next week with her show La Dolce Roma which promises to transport audiences to sunny and sensuous Italy.
Derby will be performing a sizzling summer selection of the best songs from Italy, featuring the hits: ‘Volare’, ‘Quando Quando Quando’, ‘Mambo Italiano’, ‘Americano’, ‘The Godfather’, and ‘Time To Say Goodbye’, as well as songs by Nino Rota and Henry Mancini.
A quirky and evocative romantic/comedy La Dolce Roma evokes all the distinctive Mediterranean allure of Italy, where you become tangled in the spaghetti loops of Vespa scooters, ice-creams by the Trevi fountain, mandolins serenading under the stars, and the seductive la dolce vita!
Derby Browne is an eclectic singing talent with a voice that transports audiences across Europe to the cafes and bars of Italy, France, and back again.
Starting her career at the Royal Academy in Ireland, Derby was awarded a coveted place at the Conservatory of Music in Dublin where she was given the opportunity to study singing, piano, harpsichord, and drama.
On graduation her professional career began as a member of the Medieval Irish Singers at Bunratty Castle. Her talents took her to London and Soho’s theatreland, seeking musical and creative inspiration from the French and Italian jazz café’s that populate the West End side streets.
On returning to Ireland, Derby began writing and producing her own shows, the first of which, entitled Café Mediterranean, was a blend of romantic French and Italian music from Europe. With a strong influence from artists including Edith Piaf, Sacha Distel, Charles Trenet, Jacques Brel, and Antonio Carlos Jobim, Derby toured throughout Ireland, with a showcase at Dublin’s Fringe Festival in 2005 and the debut of her first self-penned show, Café Boheme.
She now regularly tours with a variety of shows delightfully recreating the world of jazz cafés and their distinctive brand of 1950s and 1960s hits.
For her Galway performance of La Dolce Roma, Derby will be joined by The Cappuccino Ensemble, featuring Jon Henderson on guitar, Martin Tourish on accordion, and Damien Evans on double bass.
La Dolce Roma is at the Town Hall Theatre on Saturday May 16 at 8pm. Tickets are €22/18.
