Amnesty International’s Freedom Café on Middle Street recently received a makeover and to celebrate its new look, Amnesty will host an evening of poetry, talks, music, and coffee on Wednesday May 14 from 12.30pm to 9pm.
The event begins with Rita Anne Higgins, Mary O’Malley, and Kevin Higgins giving a free lunchtime poetry reading from 12.30pm to 2pm. These three poets are well known locally for dealing with issues of social justice in their work.
The readings will be followed by poetry and music by Pete Mullineaux and a reading by journalist and author Michael McCaughan from his forthcoming book about the case of death row inmate, writer, and political activist Mumia Abu Jamal.
After this there will be music from singer-songwriter Nicole Blue, rock band Bobo, Thomas McPartland, and Ivan Murray & Anna Falkenau.
After the music Noeleen Hartigan, programmes director for Amnesty International, will officially open the revamped café at 5pm with a discussion on amnesty’s work in Ireland.
The café will be open from 8am every day.
