Boy racers are terrifying residents, says councillor

Residents at ‘wits’ end’ in Loughrea claims Fine Gael councillor Michael (Moegie) Maher

Boy racers are causing havoc in the Loughrea area, that is according to Fine Gael councillor Michael (Moegie ) Maher.

The councillor made his comments at the county's JPC meeting on Monday afternoon conducted via Microsoft Teams.

Cllr Maher said families around Kennedy's Cross were terrified to drive on the road due to the reckless nature of those speeding and doing doughnuts in the area.

He said; "There is an issue of boy racers. There are 10 or 12 families terrified to come out on the road. I know a number of families have spent a couple of thousands each trying to catch these young lads doing doughnuts and causing havoc. Young families can't sleep at night. They are at a wits’ end.

Gardaí conducting patrols

"It has been reported on numerous occasions. I believe the gardai have been out a couple of nights. They are playing holy havoc for the last couple of months. This man was asking to put up cameras [to catch them] but I don't think this is the right way to go as we can't use the footage. Maybe if we had unmarked squad car.

"These families have young children. It is just not fair. They cannot sleep at night. It is just annoying. If guards can take it on board we would like some action on this."

In response to the councillor's comments Inspector Karen Maloney of Loughrea Garda Station said the gardai had been conducting patrols and will continue to monitor the situation.
