The Galway City Council should support the creation of local jobs through a new Rate Increment Scheme, which would allow new start-up businesses to pay discounted rates during their start-up phase.
This is the view of Labour’s East Ward candidate Derek Nolan, who has made a number of suggestions on how the council itself can support job creation.
“Rates in the city can be quite prohibitive for a new start-up business which has yet to build a stable customer base or revenue stream,” he said. “With the market as it is, we cannot afford to lose any potential jobs. Reduced rates is a concrete way for the council to help.”
Mr Nolan has also proposed that the council budget prioritises labour intensive investment. He also wants the council to explore how libraries can be used as local resource centres for those who are seeking work. He is also calling for the publication of details of all local authority-funded contracts, so that companies looking for sub-contracting opportunities know who to approach.
