Community employment schemes are not a panacea to job losses and the recession, but increasing the number of such schemes in Galway “would certainly alleviate some of the hardship” people are now experiencing.
This is the view of Labour Galway City Central councillor Billy Cameron who believes that community schemes similar to those already in existence in Shantalla and Terryland Park should be increased throughout the city in order to combat growing unemployment.
According to Cllr Cameron, the Galway City Council owns a site to the rear of Camillaun Park and opposite Le Cheile which has lain vacant for years and which would be suited to a bungalow type building to provide a community facility.
He says if the city council provided the site, voluntary organisations and public bodies could be approached to sponsor a project which would be for community and public benefit.
“A youth café is badly needed in the area similar to that provided on Francis Street,” said Cllr Cameron. “Pobal, Westside Youth Federation, FÁS, HSE, St Anthony’s Credit Union, and Galway City Council could be approached to act as lead partners in the formulation of an action plan with specific outcomes.”
Cllr Cameron said that in 1995, there were 40,304 people on community employment schemes as opposed to 23,868 now. In 1995 the number of community employment schemes represented about three per cent of total employment. In the last few years the places were reduced to their present numbers and about one per cent of total employment.
“As unemployment grows the Government needs to become more proactive in getting to grips with the problem,” he said. “People want a reason to get out of bed in the morning, maintain hope, contribute to society, and their local community.
