Galway Rape Crisis Centre launches its Christmas appeal

Galway Rape Crisis Centre (GRCC ) have launched its Christmas appeal in what has been one of the most challenging years for the charity. The organisation is looking to local companies and individuals to consider donating to their Christmas appeal in lieu of purchasing gifts.

This year has been an extremely challenging time for many sectors as a result of the outbreak of Covid-19. Unfortunately, the impact of the pandemic has seen GRCC’s normal fundraising activities coming to a virtual standstill whilst the demand for its services has increased by c. 25%, an increase that has been sustained since the initial lockdown restrictions were implemented in March. Companies or individuals wishing to donate may do so on www.idonate.ie/GRCCXmasGiftCard or by contacting the charity by email at [email protected] for further information.

Susan Costello, Fundraising & Communications Manager, Galway Rape Crisis Centre said their priority continues to focus on supporting those in our community around Galway City and County who are effected by sexual violence and abuse.

“We experienced some logistical challenges earlier in the year but, thanks to a cash injection from Aviva Galway, all our trained counsellors have continued to be available, providing a much-needed counselling service to those who need it.

“Unfortunately, the increased demand for our service has been sustained since the spike of a 25% increase in calls earlier this year. Notwithstanding that, we would ask anyone who is experiencing sexual violence or abuse to get in touch with us and that we will be available to support them and provide them with the necessary counselling service.

“Our gift cards offer an ideal way to say thank you to customers or friends in the lead up to Christmas or indeed to show appreciation to staff for some great work in a very challenging year, while making a donation to Galway Rape Crisis Centre on their behalf. Individuals can think outside the box in terms of giving a meaningful gift in the knowledge that, by so doing, they are helping somebody have access to much needed support”, said Susan Costello.

Thanks to our charity partner Aviva Ireland for supporting us throughout the year. The staff in Galway are genuinely invested in our work and have done some incredible fundraising throughout the year. The energy and support they have shown has really help us get through this difficult year.
