The Galway City Council must act immediately to give the final go-ahead for a swan sanctuary at Lough Rusheen Park which has been left unused for the past three years, according to Green councillor Niall Ó Brolcháin.
According to Cllr Ó Brolcháin, city officials agreed to locate the swan sanctuary at Lough Rusheen Park earlier this decade and provided a shed for it but issues arose regarding a holding pen to the front of the shed. As a result the swan sanctuary has been left unused for the last three years.
“Swan Rescue need an enclosure built for the swan sanctuary to become operational,” he said. “The council already have the funds for the job and it won’t cost the city a cent. Swan rescue provide a magnificent service to the city. It is not acceptable that volunteers should be forced to look after our swans in less than ideal conditions, sometimes in their own back gardens.”
