The Niall Mellon Township Trust will hold its inaugural Hard Hat Day - Homes for Children fundraiser in Galway tomorrow (Friday ).
According to Niall Mellon, founder of the Niall Mellon Township Trust, people are still generous to charities despite the recession. “Over 2,000 Irish people have signed up to work as volunteers for our charity to help make a success of our inaugural national flag day,” he said.
“Since 2002 we have built 11,000 houses and this has been made possible by the incredible support of so many Irish people from all over our island. We built 5,000 houses last year and hope to build 6,000 this year, but we need the continuing financial support of so many people in Ireland to achieve this. Our annual one week building blitz is now part of the Irish calendar and we hope our first national flag day will become so too.”
The money raised from Hard Hat Day - Homes for Children will provide families living in shacks in South African townships with a decent home. Almost all people living in shacks have no running water, proper sanitation, or electricity.
In the largest civic awards ceremony ever hosted by the city of Cape Town, the Niall Mellon Township Trust was recently awarded the Mayor’s Medal for exceptional achievement in the category of social affairs and services. The Niall Mellon Township Trust is the first foreign charity to receive this medal.
The charity is actively seeking volunteers for its next building blitz in November 2009, when the group will bring 1,000 volunteers to South Africa. There are 100 places remaining.
