Drivers advised to carry out regular vehicle safety checks

Almost seven out of 10 vehicles inspected as part of a free five-point safety check at Advance Pitstop centres during Irish Road Safety Week were found to have been in need of some basic safety work.

On foot of the results, Advance Pitstop, supported by the Road Safety Authority, is now offering this free five-point safety check in all its branches for the remainder of 2009.

“The results of the free checks on a total of 500 vehicles during Irish Road Safety Week last year are revealing,” said Mr Eddie Ryan, sales and marketing director of Advance Pitstop. “Sixty-seven per cen of those vehicles that came in needed some safety work carried out. The biggest problem area was vehicle lighting with 28 per cent of the vehicles inspected having a problem. Tyres were next on the list with 21 per cent of vehicles having worn or incorrect tyre pressure; 11 per cent of vehicles had defective wipers, and seven per cent of vehicles had safety work carried out on the vehicle’s brakes. Some vehicles needed multiple tasks carried out but the majority just had a single fault.”

Mr Ryan added: “Advance Pitstop is thrilled to continue its offer of a free vehicle safety check in association with the RSA. We think that the benefits of the five-point safety check are enormous, and strongly believe that this initiative will make driving safer in Ireland in 2009.”

Commenting on the campaign Mr Noel Brett, CEO of RSA said: “The idea behind the campaign is to make motorists aware that while their car might appear to be running well, it is worth checking regularly to ensure tyres are inflated to the correct pressure and not worn, and that brakes, lights, shocks, and windscreen wipers are in good working order. It will give motorists peace of mind knowing their car is fit for driving, and it’s free.”
