Pedestrian crossings, new footpaths, as well as measures to tackle surface water flooding on the Coast Road, among other works, are on the cards for Oranmore.
The Galway County Council has announced a series of works which will be taking place in and around Oranmore. These have been welcomed by Independent county councillor Jim Cuddy, as "significant progress".
Transport Infrastructure Ireland has drawn up a design plan for a pedestrian crossing at the Maldron Hotel Roundabout. Following a safety audit the project will progress to the procurement stage, after which work can begin.
The Galway City Council has received €90,000 from the Government Active Travel Scheme to construct a footpath on the left-hand side of the Old Station Road from the Maldron Hotel to the Orantown Shopping Centre and to carry out drainage works as well.
Under the Climate Action Plan €80,000 is now in place to carry out the remedial works to address the surface water flooding on the Coast Road between the roundabout and the Gurraun Road.
Under the Towns and Village Renewal Scheme, funding has been provided by the county council for streetlights on the Coast Road to Oranmore Railway Station. It is expected that the works will be completed by June 2021. The council is to spend €40,000 to replace some of the paths in the Cloonarkin Drive Estate.
‘I have been working closely with Deputy Noel Grealish on these projects and am delighted there is very positive progress," said Cllr Cuddy. "They will enhance and improve safety for all residents in Oranmore."
