Councillor concerned about Garda resources in city

A Galway city councillor has raised concerns on whether Galway city will receive a fair amount of Garda resources that are being allocated in this year’s budget.

The budget 2021 which was published on October 13, made provision for an extra 620 gardai, however, Fianna Fáil councillor Alan Cheevers is worried whether Galway will be allocated enough recruits.

Cllr Cheevers said; “I am deeply concerned that areas in my own constituency of Galway City East are under resourced. I believe we need more gardai on the ground, walking around communities, the old traditional type of policing. This follows a stabbing incident on the grounds St Bridget’s Church in Ballybane on Bank Holiday Monday evening, when a young man was injured in the incident.

“I believe the Garda are doing the best they can with the resources they have but we need extra resources, targeting the crime hotspots in the city. What we don’t want is an escalation of crimes like we have seen on Monday night and dangerous weapons being used. We must do what we can now to stamp that out before there is a fatality.”
