Gardai in the city have devised a policing plan to prevent the sale of dangerous fireworks and the lighting of bonfires this Halloween.
The issue arose in response to a question from Social Democrats Galway City East councillor, Owen Hanley, who enquired if a proactive approach was being taken in advance of Halloween this year.
"Will Galway gardaí be liaising with other local organisations to not only mitigate unwanted behaviour but also encourage activity allowed within current Covid-19 restrictions?" he asked.

In response, Chief Supt Tom Curley said that Operation TOMBOLA commenced on October 1. "A policing plan has been devised to prevent and detect the organised importation for sale of fireworks in the lead up to the Halloween period.
"All Gardaí will be briefed to be extra vigilant in the period leading up to Halloween," he continued. "Members from Community Policing Units will liaise with stakeholders and organisations in respect of stockpiling of bonfires. The Environmental Section of Galway City Council will be available to deal with the removal of stockpiles for bonfires."
