Salthill to get three new community gardaí

Cllr Donal Lyons welcomes appointment for Salthill Garda District which has, 'a population larger than most towns in the west of Ireland'

Three additional Community Gardai will be appointed to Salthill Garda Station, following a decision by the Galway West Gardai Authorities.

The decision has been welcomed by the Independent Galway City West councillor, Donal Lyons, who has raised the issue of extra community gardaí at a recent Galway City Joint Policing Board sub-committee meeting.

"At various meetings of the policing board I have raised the issue of the need for more community gardai to be allocated to the Salthill Garda District," said Cllr Lyons. "Previously there were four community gardaí based in Salthill station and over the years, this has reduced to presently just one community garda."

Cllr Lyons noted that the Salthill Garda District, which includes Knocknacarra, which alone has a population of c18,000, is "larger than most towns in the west of Ireland". He said: "The addition of the extra Community Garda in the area will see more of a presence on the ground and this will give peace of mind to the community."
