Council must take 'urgent action' to address lack of burial ground in Claregalway, says Cuddy

Attempts to identify a site for a new graveyard have been ongoing since 2015

"Urgent action" must be taken by the Galway County Council to address the lack of burial ground in Claregalway, especially when this is "a rapidly growing parish" making this is "a very sensitive issue for local people".

This is the view of Independent county councillor Jim Cuddy, who said it would be "a sad day for the people of the area" if locals could no longer be buried in Claregalway, but instead would have to be buried in "Rinville or elsewhere".

'One of the most basic services that people require is a plot to bury their loved ones'

Attempts to identify a site for a new graveyard have been ongoing since 2015 and a senior Galway County Council official is coming to Claregalway next Tuesday to look at potential sites.

"I am hoping a site can be identified and the CPO process started as soon as possible," said Cllr Cuddy. "‘Property tax is being paid by local residents to ensure that local services are provided and one of the most basic services that people require is a plot to bury their loved ones."
