Gardenwise | The Benefits of Going Under Cover

No matter how lovely your garden is, you must admit that sometimes it would be really convenient if you could just add a roof. Fresh air is all very well and we need the rain for sure, but wouldn’t it be lovely if we could enjoy the garden without the rain actually falling on us while we do it?

Increasing numbers of clients are looking for some kind of roofed structure to be incorporated into their garden plans, to extend their enjoyment of their outside space. It makes perfect sense – if you’re investing in a lovely garden, why not maximise the time you can spend in it? Not to be confused with garages or sheds for storage, a garden structure can be anything from a roofed veranda extending from the house itself, to a standalone gazebo or summerhouse.

A typical veranda would be roofed with polycarbonate or glass to let in the light while keeping you dry – and glass sides can always be added to keep you cosy while retaining those lovely garden views. A gazebo is usually a roofed structure with supporting uprights, and can make a lovely focal point at the end of a path or tucked among flowering shrubs. Summerhouses can be a lovely garden escape – typically a small timber room, there are many shapes and styles and they can be painted to complement the main house or to provide a contrast. Being more sheltered, you can add wicker furniture, cushions and throws, safe in the knowledge that they’ll be safe from weather – the perfect place for a summer tea party or just somewhere to escape to with a good book.

Whichever option you choose, you’ll need to consider access to and from it and how it will fit in with the garden as a whole. Sometimes a well designed covered space can work in a couple of ways – a reasonably sized potting shed, for instance – every serious gardener’s dream – could accommodate a comfortable chair or two and a kettle – for those all important undercover tea breaks!
