Canney raises issue of Tuam and Ballinasloe swimming pools funding

Deputy Seán Canney has raised the issue of funding for the Galway County Council to keep the two pools open in Tuam and Ballinasloe with Minister Paschal Donohue.

Deputy Canney said; “I raised the matter in the context of the severe shortage of funding available to the Local Authority as a result of Covid-19. Minister Donohue accepted the fact the leisure facilities are really important facilities and he accepted the need for them to be kept open.

"The Minister further stated that the Department of Housing, Planning, and Local Government need to engage with Galway County Council. The council have a huge task on their hands to maintain the facilities. The leisure facilities in Tuam and Ballinasloe are an important asset to the town, swimming is popular across generations. The public health benefits and boost to enjoyment of life are the reasons to keep these facilities open.

"The Programme for Government promises a strong emphasis on swimming and the situation in Tuam and Ballinasloe will be an acid test for the Government."
