Student achievements celebrated at Kumon 2020 awards

The achievements of students of all ages and abilities were safely celebrated at the Kumon 2020 Awards held at the Galway Greyhound Stadium. Presentations were made in single household groups who stood for a photoshoot (by Murtography ) with the Mayor of Galway City, Cllr. Michael Cubbard while the entire ceremony was livestreamed (by SoundtoLight ) to the cars of the waiting families, and indeed, to their friends and relatives across the globe.

The Kumon programmes in Maths and English are completely individualised, finding the just right start point for each student from a diagnostic assessment. The student progresses through doing a small amount of work daily, (20 minutes or less ) at a pace best suited to that student. The programme is designed to encourage independent learning, and over time, with committed study, many students work far ahead of their age.

David Schirliu and Anusooya Thapa were Gold Medallist Completers. They completed the English programme to Leaving Certificate standard techniques, more than three years ahead of their age. Anusooya Thapa then delivered a cogent and inspiring speech speaking of her own development through the programme, the challenges, the support available, and her pride in her Completer’s Award.

Gold medals were presented to students studying more than three years ahead of their age, silver to those working two or more years ahead of their age and bronze medals presented to students working at least six months ahead of their age.

Special Merit Awards were given to Ruby Walsh, Lauren Gannon and Yusr Yousif. A painted ceramic bowl (Jed Gjerek ) was specially commissioned to recognise the extraordinary efforts and progress of Maire Connolly.

The Stephen Hayden Trophy, a copper sculpture by Ronan Butler, was presented to Abigail Sunil for outstanding personal excellence.
