Two Athenry estates to be connected to public sewerage network

Works to be carried out at Lorro Gate and Cluain na Cathrach after funding from Department of Housing

More than €300,000 has been allocated by the Department of Housing to bring sewerage and water provision in the Lorro Gate and Cluain na Cathrach estates in Athenry, up to standard.

The estates currently cannot be taken in charge by the Galway County Council because the sewerage connection is not connected to the main town system, or at a standard acceptable to the council.

However the funding from the Department to the council - €243,797 for Lorro Gate and €165,047 for Cluain na Cathrach - to the public sewerage network. The funding will cover 75 per cent of the estimated cost.

The funding has been welcomed by Green Party Galway East representative, Eoin Madden. "The residents in these housing developments have had to put up with substandard lighting and water connections," he said. "While these issues will take time to resolve, this is a positive first step."

Mr Madden is calling on the county council to proceed "as soon as possible with the works" as this enhancement is "necessary to give peace of mind to the residents".
