600 house party calls were drain on resources during Covid, says Chief Super

During July and August, officers dealt with noisy house parties where occupants did not adhering to the restrictions on social distancing

Answering close to 600 calls to address house parties in the Galway area during July and August was a huge drain on Garda resources, the County Council Joint Policing Committee meeting was told this week.

While receiving praise for the manner in which Gardai had dealt with the extra duties allocated ot them during lockdown, the top Garda in the region said that as we move through the phases, it is up to us all to adhere to whatever guidelines are in place at the time.

Chief Supt Tom Curley said that during July and August, his officers were very busy answering calls about noisy house parties whwere occupants were not adhering to the restrictions on social distancing and gatherings.

“From July 1 to August 9, we had calls about 600 house parties in this area. This was a huge drain on resources. As we go through the next phase, it is up to everyone to continually use whatever means possible to enforce the guidelines that are there.

“It is very important that everyone gets on board for this. Numbers are going in the wrong direction and the next three months are vital for this country,” he said.

Praise for the role of the gardai during the restriction enforced by Covid 19 were led by Cllr Colm Keaveney who said gardai were given an unenviable task that has been met by the most comprehensive and welcome public service.’
