Kumon students receive awards at socially distanced ceremony

Blue balloons bounced at the Galway Greyhound Stadium on Sunday September 13 for the Kumon Galway 2020 Awards. Held outdoors with rigorous compliance to the current restrictions, each car served as a private auditorium for the event live streamed on YouTube by SoundtoLight. Families remained in their cars throughout except at their turn to collect their awards while distanced, masked, and sanitised. A socially distanced photoshoot followed with the Mayor of Galway, Cllr Mike Cubbard.

While the students missed the clapping audience of indoor events, YouTube enabled family and friends around the globe to celebrate live the achievements of these Kumon students in the most multicultural city in Ireland.

Each student received a level certificate. Those studying six months or more ahead of their age received bronze medals. Silver medals were awarded to students studying more than two years ahead of their age, and students studying material more than three years ahead of their age received gold medals.

Two students present reached the highest academic awards of the Kumon English programme. David Schirliu and Anusooya Thapa were Gold Medal Completers. Anusooya Thapa then took the stage to deliver an excellent speech on the challenges, difficulties, and achievement of being a Kumon Completer.

The Stephen Hayden Trophy was presented to Abigail Sunil, maths gold medallist, who despite the multiple challenges of Covid-19 succeeded in increasing her academic lead beyond three years ahead of her age.
