Tips for getting your child to sleep at night

A good night’s sleep is critical for your child’s growth, memory, and cognitive development. Sleep problems can cause your child to become hyper, irritable, forgetful, and to have extremes in behaviour. Children are happier and healthier when they get sufficient, quality sleep. Making it a habit now isn’t just a good idea — your child’s ability to reach his/her full potential may depend on it. Following the tips below will help ensure your child sleeps soundly at night.

Set up a regular bedtime routine for your child to develop good sleep patterns and encourage your child to relax and wind down before bed. Blue light from televisions, computers, and phones suppresses the production of the sleep hormone, making it harder to fall asleep. It helps to turn these devices off at least one hour before bedtime.

Bedwetting is a normal part of growing up. Whether your child wets the bed regularly, or just once in a while, it is important to invest in a mattress protector. A waterproof mattress protector will protect the mattress from permanent stains, odour, and structural damage. Being able to deal with a wet bed quickly and easily will be less stressful for you and your child.

Choosing the right mattress for your child is essential as sleep is vital for his/her physical and mental development. The mattress needs to be able to support a child properly as he/she increases in weight and size, so that he/she can have a good night's sleep, every night. Limit your child's intake of chocolate, energy drinks, and tea in the evening, as they contain caffeine. Keep bedtimes and wake-up times within one or two hours of each other each day to help keep your child's body clock in a regular pattern.
