An increase in antisocial behaviour and the activities of boy-racers make a Garda HQ for Renmore - promised more than three years ago - a necessity.
This is the view of Fine Gael Galway City East candidate Barra Nevin. He has written to the Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern to question the status of the three acre site opposite GMIT which was earmarked for the new Garda HQ for Galway, to replace Mill Street.
“Three years ago when the announcement was made, Mill Street station was described as ‘over-crowded and inadequate to provide a policing service that Galway needs’,” said Mr Nevin.
At a recent Joint Policing Committee meeting in Galway, reservations were expressed as to the viability of such a project considering the financial state of the country. However Mr Nevin said it is important Garda services in Galway are maintained despite the current financial crisis.
