Calls for county council investment in sporting facilities

Cllr Liam Carroll calls on county councilto encourage participation in sports because of Covid-19

The Galway County Council should invest in its sporting and recreational facilities just like the Galway City Council has done for Cappagh Park, that is according to Fine Gael councillor Liam Carroll.

Speaking at the Athenry Municipal District meeting at County Hall on Tuesday afternoon, Cllr Carroll said the newly developed 4G pitch at Maree Oranmore FC was now in need of floodlights and that the county council needs now more than ever, to encourage participation in sports because of Covid-19.

'We need sporting facilities because of Covid-19. It’s going to be with us for a long time to come and the best way to fight is to get out in the fresh air'

He said; “This is an important issue. The club was formed in 2005 [and] probably is the biggest club not only in Galway but in Connacht, with membership of over 700 players and members. They have completed a new facility in Maree but need lights. The lights are going to cost around €89,000 to €90,000.

.

[Our clubs] are looking at developments completed by the Galway City Council where lights have been provided for facilities in the city. They are looking at city developments especially Cappagh Park and they are thinking, ‘Why can’t the county [council] do the same as city [council]?’ and I concur with that.
