Concern at lack of flexibility in sludge hub choice

Deputy Sean Canney has received confirmation that Irish Water are still awaiting the final report on the site selection process for the Regional Sludge Hub which will be published toward the end of the year.

Deputy Canney said; “I have received confirmation from Irish Water that they did receive contact from Bord na Móna who have alternative site suggestions for the Sludge Hub for Connacht. However, Irish Water have decided not to pursue these alternative sites as this report will only examine sites in the ownership of Irish Water.

“This is a very narrow focus with only two sites under consideration, Sligo and Tuam. Bord na Móna potentially could solve all the problems nationally with sludge disposal and they could generate energy and by-products which would be an advantage.

“Bord na Móna are now in the waste business and can provide suitable sites. I believe that Irish Water need to re-think their strategy and look beyond their own sites.”
