The Thing is coming to the Pálás

John Carpenter's 1982 cult classic gets a big screen outing this month

THE THING, John Carpenter's classic 1982 film starring Kurt Russell, and boasting special effects which were astonishing in their day, and still impressive now, will get a big screen outing at the Pálás.

The Thing will be shown as part of the 'I can't believe you haven't seen...' screenings, selected by Gugai from the Róisín Dubh, on Wednesday September 23 at 10.30pm.

The Thing is a remake of Howard Hawks' 1951 film of the same name and an adaptation of John W Campbell Jr. story 'Who Goes There?'. The special effects were created by a team of more than 40 technicians, which included the acclaimed creature-effects artists Rob Bottin and Stan Winston.

'The Thing helped stimulate a new wave of sci-fi horror films'

Set in the Antarctic, an American research outpost comes face to face with a malevolent entity that can mutate into anything it kills. As such, they do not know which one of their dwindling numbers is human, and which is merely a cloak for The Thing which wants to do them harm.

.

As Anthony Reed said: "Along with Ridley Scott's futuristic Alien, The Thing helped stimulate a new wave of sci-fi horror films in which action and special effects wizardry were often seen as ends in themselves."
