A number of significant road improvement works, footpath construction projects, and flood defence measures are set to commence in Oranmore following the allocation of more than €300,000 in government funding.
Minister of State Hildegarde Naughton said the investment would result in tangible improvements for the benefit of the town’s residents.
The approved works include the provision of a new €90,000 footpath on Station Road, providing pedestrians with a safe link from Carrowmoneash roundabout to Oranmore Town Centre.
A total of €80,000 will also be spent on drainage works on the Coast Road in Oranmore to prevent flooding along a section of the R338, and the adjacent footpath.
Existing footpaths in both Cloonarkin Drive and Lios na Crí housing estates will also be replaced at a cost of €60,000.
Minister Naughton said that the poor condition of these paths had become a safety issue and was the subject of complaints from older residents.
She said; “These are relatively small projects that will make a big difference to people in Oranmore. Crucially, the works will go ahead immediately and should be completed by the end of November.”
In addition to the planned drainage works, Castle Road will also be resurfaced at a cost of €45,000 following issues that resulted from storm damage last February, added Minister Naughton.
“This is the main access toad to the secondary school in Oranmore and sees high volumes of traffic. Resurfacing is therefore considered a top priority following the damage that was incurred earlier this year.”
Separately, a €30,000 flood defence wall on Oran Island in Oranmore has been approved, while design work on a coastal protection project in Tawin, Oranmore will also progress before 2021.
