More bins, not sprinklers, needed for Spanish Arch, say PBP

'Forcing people away from Spanish Arch may well force people indoors'

More bins, and more frequent emptying of bins by the Galway City Council, is needed to tackle the problem of littering in the Spanish Arch area.

This is the view of People Before Profit Galway spokesperson, Conall McCallig, who said "access to waste disposal services" was all lacking in the city centre in general, as well as in the NUIG area and along the Prom in Salthill.

"It is a common sight to see public bins full to the brim with waste, increasing the likelihood of littering occurring," he said, and he called on the city council to hire more staff in its waste section.

PBP Galway were also highly critical of Fine Gael Galway City Central councillor, Eddie Hoare, for his recent call for the installation of sprinklers at crowd gathering hotspots in the city, such as the Spanish Arch, to encourage people to disperse after 10pm.

Mr McCallig called the proposal "outlandish", and said installing sprinklers "will give the people of Galway even less outdoor green spaces to enjoy". He said the public should be allowed to visit such areas "as long as they adhere to social distancing".

"Forcing people away from Spanish Arch may well force people indoors," he said, "where they are more likely to aid the spread of Covid-19. Cllr Hoare would be better pressing his Government to provide essential public infrastructure."
