Headford works result in savings to the taxpayer

County council carries out works on the town itself, resulting in €80,000 saving

Major improvement works in Headford have been completed and came in under budget, with a saving to the taxpayer of €80,000.

The works involved installing underground cables, new LED lighting, repairs to footpaths, and the resurfacing of a car park. The overall cost of the project was €200,000 when tendered. However, Fianna Fáil councillor Mary Hoade, met with council engineer Paul Connolly to discuss this, and the Council, under the local leadership of Stephen Quinn, took on the work as the main contractor.

The council received €120,000 from the Department of the Environment for the works, which enabled it to complete the project, resulting in a saving of €80,000 to the taxpayer. The council worked as project manager with the ESB and Electric Skyline to carry out the works.

Some works were carried out to protect the old wheel in the square that was a focal point on old fair days, and has local cultural and historical elements. "It is hoped to work with local historical groups in the area," said Cllr Hoade, "with a view to putting a plaque in place at this location."
