More than €3 million has been made available by the Government for housing adaptation grants in Galway for older people, those with disabilities, and people with mobility problems.
The Galway County Council has been allocated €2,275,421 under the scheme, while the Galway City Council will have almost €1 million to invest. The combined allocations represent a five per cent increase compared to 2019.
Grants of up to €30,000 will be made available for people with disabilities, while up to €8,000 can be allocated to help older people with improvements or repairs. The funding is intended to help people with disabilities or reduced mobility to continue living independently in their own homes.

It is also expected that these grants for structural works will create employment opportunities, and help to relieve pressure on the health service by supporting independent living for as long as desirable.
The funding has been welcomed by Fine Gael Galway West TD, Hildegarde Naughton. “At a most vulnerable time," she said, "these grants can make the difference in offering people a choice to continue living independently in their own home when that would otherwise prove impossible.”
The grants are 80 per cent funded by the Exchequer, while 20 per cent is provided by the local authority. A total of €73.75 million will be invested in the scheme nationwide this year.
