Applications now open for NUI Galway University of Sanctuary scholarship programme

NUI Galway recently opened its University of Sanctuary scholarship programme to potential applicants. The scholarship programme is open to international protection applicants, refugees, Irish Travellers, and vulnerable immigrant groups, and is part of a broader effort by the university as a designated University of Sanctuary to widen participation among underrepresented groups.

There are 12 scholarships in total, for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and details of the available scholarships can be found at http://www.nuigalway.ie/sanctuary/scholarships.

Applications opened last week, and the closing date is Wednesday, September 16, at 5pm. For more information, email [email protected].

Aidan Harte, coordinator of NUI Galway’s University of Sanctuary initiative, said: “NUI Galway stands firm in our commitment to respond to the increasingly multicultural and diverse society in which we all live, and our University of Sanctuary scholarship programme removes certain barriers which prevent the most marginalised in our society from entering third-level education. It is not a panacea against marginalisation, however, but a step in the right direction, and truly reflects the university’s strategic pillars of respect, openness, sustainability, and excellence.”

The opening of scholarship applications coincided with the commencement of the university’s Sanctuary in Politics programme, a free four-week programme which informs participants on Ireland’s social, cultural, historical, and political spheres, with the objective of empowering them to influence and contribute to a wonderfully diverse Irish society.
