Pressure on bars to ignore substantial meal law

Bars are under huge pressure by members of the public to ignore the €9 substantial meal law, that is the viewpoint of the owner of The King's Head, Paul Grealish.

Mr Grealish said bars which are currently trading as restaurants are being challenged by customers who wish to buy alcohol but not food.

He said; "Bars are under huge pressure to stretch the rules. Some members of the public are challenging us to break the [substantial meal] law. We have had some cases where we had bookings where people only wanted to order drink but no food."

However, Mr Grealish urged customers to respect the directive from Government as many bars are still not open.

He said; "There are thousands of bars [around the country]. We need to get it right this phase so that they can reopen and the rest can stay open."
