The Browne Doorway in Eyre Square, which is partially obscured by hoarding, will become more visible to the public when a new glass-like protective hoarding is placed around it in the near future.
The Browne Doorway is in urgent need of renovation and repair. It was due to be moved to the Galway City Museum for conservation and display, but following an objection, An Bord Pleanála ruled it must stay at Eyre Square. Nonetheless, the need to maintain the structure remains.
A conservation report, architectural report, and structural engineers’ report have all been carried out.
According to the Galway City Council’s heritage office, the conservation report is being studied and from that it will be decided on the best way to proceed.
In the meantime, a polybutenal plastic, ie a glass-like, structure will be erected around the doorway.
Jim Higgins, the city’s heritage officer, said this will allow the public to view the doorway properly again and see the conservation work as it happens.
