The Kings Head to reopen on Thursday July 2

The Grealish family, owners of the historic 800-year-old The Kings Head in the heart of Galway, have announced that they will resume trading as a restaurant on Thursday July 2. In line with Government guidelines, which have been announced by Fáilte Ireland, the premises will reopen for food and drinks with all of the recommended physical distancing and health and safety measures in place.

Named Best Casual Dining in Connacht at the 2019 Irish Restaurant Awards, The Kings Head has built a strong food business in recent years based on a solid foundation of sourcing only the best local and seasonal produce along the Wild Atlantic Way. Open for lunch and dinner every day, the food is complemented by a new drinks menu which includes local craft beers, local gins, whiskey, an extensive cocktail list, as well as homemade cordials and lemonade.

Paul Grealish said: “We are excited to be reopening onJuly 2. We have really missed our fantastic staff and customers, both of whom breathe life into our 800-year-old building. We are looking forward to welcoming old friends and new to enjoy great local food and drinks.

"The food element of our business has expanded considerably over the years and will now take centre stage as we reopen. We are thrilled to be able to once again support the many wonderful local artisan producers that we have worked so closely with over the years. Reopening at this time of the year also means we have access to wonderful Irish fresh fish and seafood such as Kelly’s mussels and clams, crab claws, lobster, monkfish, and hake.”

The Kings Head plans to offer its full daytime and evening menu in both the bar and The Kings Head Bistro from midday each day. Whether customers are sitting in the medieval bar or in the bistro, The Kings Head’s food philosophy is the same - ‘If it’s fresh, local and in season, it goes on the menu’.

Paul Grealish continued: “Our number one priority right now is preparing our premises and implementing procedures to ensure the safety of both our customers and staff. We have considerably reduced our capacity by removing tables and chairs, we have installed protective screens, added snugs and hand sanitising stations, upgraded our kitchen, and introduced new operational protocols to ensure that we play our part in keeping our customers and staff safe in compliance with the Fáilte Ireland health guidelines. We have also engaged food safety consultant Sinead O’Halloran to assess and advise us.

"We are asking our customers to work with us to create a safe and enjoyable dining experience for everyone. At the end of the day, this is a global pandemic which is difficult for everyone. We would ask our customers to be kind to themselves, to each other, and to our staff. No doubt this too shall pass and better days lie ahead. Táimid ar ais, buail isteach.”

Given the large capacity of the bar and bistro, The Kings Head expect to have plenty of availability when it reopens. Families are welcome with children’s menus, high chairs, and baby changing facilities available.

The Kings Head will be open for lunch and dinner every day from 12 noon. Reservations can be made by email at [email protected], by phone at 091 567866, or in-person at The Kings Head from July 2.
