Work is to begin on 13 new bus shelters throughout Galway city, with shelters located at Crestwood Estate, Castlepark Road, Shangort Road, Ballymoneen Road, Knocknacarra Road, Barna Road, Bóthar le Chéile; Thomas Hynes Road, Newcastle Road Upper, Costello Road, and Colmcille Road.
In April 2019, the Galway City Council invited submissions from Bus Éireann and City Direct, and from councillors, to nominate suitable locations for additional bus shelters in each of the city wards.
All locations proposed were surveyed and assessed against a number of criteria, including passenger numbers boarding at the stop; sufficient space to fit the bus shelter on public land; impact on adjoining property; requirement for additional civil works; and where an existing route was likely to be rerouted due to proposed development, or as part of the Galway Transport Strategy.

Following the assessment, 13 locations were approved by the NTA for funding under Phase One and shelters will be provided at these bus stop locations in 2020.
Independent Galway City West councillor, Donal Lyons has welcomed the development, particularly those shelters for the Knocknacarra area at on the Shangort Road located beside Joyce’s Supermarket; on the Ballymoneen Road, near the entrance to Seacrest and opposite the entrance to Westbrook; on the Barna Road close to the junction between Barna Road and Knocknacarra Cross; at Knocknacarra and opposite the entrance to Salthill Caravan Park.
"All of these bus stops are used extensively," said Cllr Lyons. "I believe the necessary infrastructure needs to be in place if the public will be enticed to avail of public transport."
