Merlin Park Hospital rehabilitation unit to reopen

Move welcomed by Dep Catherine Connolly, but TD critical of its closure, saying it should never have happened originally

The rehabilitation unit at Merlin Park Hospital is to reopen after June 30, the HSE has confirmed. The move has been welcomed by Independent Galway West TD, Catherine Connolly.

Dep Connolly said it is "essential" the reopening should happen without delay. "This is a unit that has seen considerable investment over the last number of years which enabled it to provide an excellent service," she said. "The decision to close it made absolutely no sense, and even less sense to transfer the patients to the Bon Secours hospital leaving the unit empty."

Dep Connolly also welcomed the confirmation that elective orthopaedic surgery has also been reinstated and that the management had started to reopen beds from the last week in May.
