Druid Debuts go online in July

Company’s annual rehearsed reading series to be broadcast on Thursdays

DRUID DEBUTS, the company’s annual rehearsed reading series, will, this summer, become a live online experience featuring four new plays.

The Druid Debut series is usually a fixture in the Galway International Arts Festival programme, allowing audiences to experience plays in development. Previous Druid Debuts, such as Sonya Kelly's acclaimed Furniture, have gone on to full production and national tours.

However, despite the State moving out of Lockdown, numerous restrictions remain upon shows and larger gatherings, hence the Debuts will be performed online on Thursdays at 7.30pm from July 2 to 23 via Zoom.

The plays making their debuts will be How’s Life by Nina Mitrovic (translated by Nina Mitrovic and Darren Tighe ) on July 2; Wall by Edward Lee (July 9 ); Four Days In July by Peter Daly (July 16 ); An Honest Woman by Erica Murray (July 23 ). The plays were chosen from some 400 scripts that were submitted in 2019 via Druid's New Writing submission window.

.

“It’s always an exciting time picking the plays for the Debuts and hearing the audiences reactions to the first reading of a play that might go on to full production at Druid someday," said Druid artistic director, Garry Hynes.

Playwrights will be given professional support, a director, a cast, and a short rehearsal period to develop their script. This year, the writer, director, and cast will meet and rehearse virtually before presenting the reading. The rehearsed readings are live-streamed and not pre-recorded. After each reading, audience feedback is invited as a means of further development.

How to watch and take part

Tickets go on sale from Monday June 22 at Druid.ie and cost €5 for each reading or €15 for all four readings. At least 24 hours before the performance, patrons will receive an email with login details. If you are not in the position to purchase a ticket but would like to register, email [email protected].

The 2020 New Writing submission window for Druid Debuts will open at 12 noon Monday June 22 and will close 12 noon Friday July 31.
