House Plant - new release finds Cat Turner in reflective mood

Singer/musician/producer explores broadens out her sound on new five-track EP

CAT TURNER has won notice as an electronic musician, but her new five-track EP, House Plant, finds her adding the experimental and the acoustic to her electro sound.

The Galway based singer/songwriter/producer has gone for a more stripped back production on House Plant, which reflects on relationships, interaction, and the choices we make.

"I look at mine and other peoples crutches and excuses for things," says Cat. "Do you really get to decide what makes up happy in a world that's made up of relationships with others? Are there quick fixes? A song like ‘I Need you’ asks, does being pushed too far even really allow you to control your own mind?"

'Things happen that make you need empathy for others, but do you grow from these or end up not caring 'cause you’re wrapped up in your own experience?'

The electronic tracks are strong, but the acoustic guitar number, 'Who Decides' shows this could also be a worthwhile form for the artist to explore in more detail.

The closing track gets to the heart of the EP's themes and, for Cat, has taken on a new meaning during the Covid-19 pandemic. 'The meaning has changed for me a lot living in the world we are in now," she says. "This one is questioning why people lack empathy at times. Things happen to you that make you need empathy for others, but do you grow from these or end up not caring for other things 'cause you’re wrapped up in your own experience?"
