Hoare calls for felling of 'dangerous trees' in the city

Fine Gael councillor says any trees needed to be felled must be replaced with younger trees.

Trees made dangerous by bad weather, or which are overhanging homes, need to be felled and replaced with younger trees, according to Fine Gael Galway City Central councillor, Eddie Hoare.

Cllr Hoare is calling on the Galway City Council to "urgently deal with a number of dangerous trees" across the city, following the high winds of last weekend. He is currently liaising with City Hall's parks department on the issue.

“We have had one of our worst winters in years with a number of severe storms. We had another very bad storm on Friday," he said. "People are living in fear with dangerous trees overhanging their homes. If and when one of these falls, someone will be either seriously hurt or even killed. This needs to be avoided at all costs.”

The Galway City Council will be appointing a tree officer later this year to carry out a full assessment of old trees, but Cllr Hoare believes "all dangerous trees need to be felled in advance of this appointment". However he does advocate that any reeled trees must be replaced with younger ones.
