Road safety ramped up in Tynagh

Suite of road safety measures funded by Cllr Shane Curley in east Galway

A number of road safety measures are currently being installed in Tynagh thanks to funding from a Galway County Councillor.

Cllr Shane Curley, who paid for their installation from his discretionary annual allowance, said that road safety measures were very important issues during last year's local election.

Cllr Curley said; "One of the things that stood out to me during the local elections this time last year was the genuine fear people in Tynagh had in relation to the speed of cars going through the village. I made a promise to them at the time that I'd work with them on the issue. Thankfully, I've managed to deliver on that promise. Getting work done can be slow and frustrating, but this certainly is pleasing.

"The council have put a series of road markings on both approach roads to the village. I've also paid for driver feedback signs for a number of villages, including Tynagh. Research suggests that these are by far the most effective method of reducing traffic speed.

"This will hopefully provide peace of mind for people in the area, particularly those with young children using Tynagh hurling pitch. The facility hosts plenty of hurling championship matches, and it's a busy stretch of road. This was badly needed.

"I'd like to thank Kieran Harney and Joe Fahy from Tynagh for working with me on this, as well as the council staff involved."
