Covid 19 pandemic - impact on Leaving Cert students

GMIT’s student counsellor Dervla Fahy acknowledges the difficulties Leaving Cert students may be experiencing due to Covid-19.

There has been a rapid shift in students’ lives from “the norm” to one of uncertainty due to the Covid-19 pandemic which is impacting people all over the world. The pandemic has caused increased levels of stress, anxiety, and fear for individuals and communities. Students are experiencing a number of difficulties dealing with the many layers created by Covid-19. While efforts are being taken to contain the spread of Covid-19, which is critical at this point, there are a number of concerns and issues being raised psychologically for people and in particular students. Leaving Cert students are dealing with a disruption to their typical way of learning and a level of uncertainty surrounding achieving their goals and aspirations.

There have been increased levels of anxiety, worry, concern, hopelessness, and despair for many students. Difficulties have been further exacerbated for students already experiencing mental health issues. It is natural for some students to experience strong emotional reactions to the changes that have occurred since the closure of schools in March 2020. GMIT would like to reassure students and parents that we are mindful of the types of unique experiences students may present with in the next academic year.

In the meantime, although difficult, it is important that Leaving Cert students try to regain a focus on their future ambitions. The CAO Change of Mind Facility is open until July 1. Colleges around the country are providing online resources and advice to assist students to use this time well in choosing the right course for them.
