Galway City Council must "ensure" the city gets "a fair slice" of the €1 million in funding announced by the Government to tackle the spike in illegal dumping since the Covid-19 restrictions came into force.
This is the view of Fine Gael Galway City Central councillor, Eddie Hoare, who has welcomed the Anti-Dumping Initiative funding, announced this week by the Minister for Communications, Climate Action, and Environment, Richard Bruton. The funding will go towards waste removal and the installation of CCTV or other monitoring and surveillance equipment.
“There are a number of blackspots for illegal dumping in Galway," said Cllr Hoare. "The installation of CCTV is the only deterrent and needs to be installed."
Cllr Hoare has also called on the council to carry out road repairs at the bottle banks station in Westside. “The bottle banks are being used more than ever," he said. "There are a number of large potholes developing and are a serious health and safety hazard."
