Closure of Galway City Council operated sports facilities is "vital to combat and to decrease the curve of Covid 19", according to Fianna Fáil Galway City East councillor, Alan Cheevers.
Cllr Cheevers believes the council had little choice but to take this action. "I have seen large groups over the weekend congregating in tennis courts, basketball courts, and all weather facilities and this is not applying to social distancing."
Cllr Cheevers has called on the public to do "everything we can to protect the health of our citizens and bring down the curve". Recently the Fianna Fáil city councillors collectively called on the city council chief executive, Brendan McGrath, to close both the Prom and Eyre Square because of large crowds gathering in both locations.
