Cracks emerge in FG strategy to win two City East seats

Fine Gael’s bold attempt to win an additional seat in Galway City East appears to be falling apart at the seams as one of the three candidates in the ward is being accused is failing to fall into line regarding the constituency divide.

Earlier this year it was agreed among the three candidates - Cllr Brian Walsh, Barra Nevin, and Frank Fahy - that the ward would be divided three ways in order to spread the FG vote as equally as possible.

Under the strategy Mr Fahy was to get the north of the ward including Menlo, Castlelawn, Ballinfoyle, and Castlegar. Cllr Walsh’s patch included the ultra competitive Mervue, Renmore, and Ballybane. The remainder of the ward, Doughiska, Roscam, Roshill, and Ballybrit was to be left to Mr Nevin.

According to sources within Fine Gael, all is not going to plan however as a number of weeks ago Mr Fahy was openly canvassing in Cllr Walsh’s territory in Ballybane and recently he issued a press release regarding an issue that arose while he was canvassing in Mr Nevin’s patch in Ballybrit. As a result there is some annoyance at this happening.
