The Shakespeare Sessions - the Bard for the modern age

Climate change, gender, and mental health to be explored in three of Shakespeare's iconic plays

SHAKESPEARE'S ROMEO and Juliet, King Lear, and Hamlet, will each be presented at the Town Hall Theatre, across two days, by the Cyclone Rep theatre-in-education company.

Cork city based Cyclone Rep, one of Ireland's longest running providers of theatre-in-education performances and workshops, will present its Shakespeare Sessions, which are aimed at junior and senior cycle students.

The Romeo and Juliet Session will be performed on Monday March 23 at 9.45am and 1pm; The King Lear Session is on Tuesday 24 at 9.45am; while The Hamlet Session is also on Tuesday 24, but at 1pm. In the spirit of Shakespearean theatre, the sessions highlight both the physicality of the era’s acting and the humour of the works. There will also be audience participation, discussions on key themes, and a question and answer session.

"We bring Shakespeare alive and into the modern age for students in a fun and fresh way," said a spokesperson for the company. "Our King Lear Session tackles climate change while our Romeo and Juliet examines gender in Shakespeare's time. Our Hamlet Session looks at the different interpretations surrounding the theme of madness."

Tickets are from the Town Hall (091 - 569777, www.tht.ie ). Teachers and special needs assistants go free. See www.cyclonerep.com
