IT IS extraordinary to think that an artist who has been around as long, and who is held in such high esteem, as Greg Dulli, is only now releasing his first solo album under his own name.
GreG Dulli has been a mainstay of American alternative-rock since the 1980s when he co-founded the much admired The Afghan Whigs, and continuing on with The Twilight Singers, through to his acclaimed collaborations with Mark Lanigan. His only solo venture came in 2001, but under the moniker of Amber Headlights, with the release of an album of the same name.
In February, Dulli released Random Desire, under his own name, and he will play songs from that album, and from across his career, at the Róisín Dubh on Thursday March 19 at 8pm.
Random Desire has won critical acclaim. Rolling Stone said it "reminds us why he was one of the alt-rock era's most compelling tortured romantics". The AV Club declared it "the best snapshot yet of the musician’s dark, soulful style". The single, 'It Falls Apart', also won notice, with Stereogum declaring it "errs on the eerie side of Dulli’s signature sound...[it is] the Greg Dulli version of Radiohead’s ‘Reckoner,’ which means it rules."
